challenge
The City of Zurich opted for an Open Government Data strategy in an effort to make anonymised, city-level data available for the public and private use. During its implementation, city officials discovered the data was highly dispersed internally, and the departments were unsure of which data could be published.
Process

1. Identifying partners

2. Interviewing

3. Structuring findings

4. Ideating solutions

5. Building prototypes

6. Testing prototypes

steps in-depth

"The quality of a design sprint depends on the experience and the confidence of the coaches. The Spark Works team was able to address exactly these requirements. Their competence when guiding through the methods and their empathy for the topic allowed a successful workshop-week for all participants."

STEFAN PABST, PROJECT MANAGER, SMART CITY, STADTENTWICKLUNG, STADT ZURICH

outcome
We efficiently and securely delivered the data to the public via an internal, online tool with the support of the City of Zurich departments. This internal tool will help guide employees through data selection, clarify legal questions and create a prioritisation for publication. Internal communication measures were implemented to support and encourage the publication of pertinent data.

Key insight

Running the design sprint format with diverse stakeholders from across different entities of the city was both prolific and challenging at the same time. Having an experienced partner like Spark Works to design and moderate the process proved very valuable, so we have agreed on a long-term partnership with the Smart City Lab to continue creating opportunities of digitisation for the benefit of the population, companies and the city administration.
